Topic 7: The cassinga massacre

The Cassinga Massacre occurred on May 4, 1978, during the South African Border War. It took place in the town of Cassinga, located in southern Angola. At that time, Cassinga was a base for the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), a liberation movement fighting for Namibia's independence from South African rule.

The South African Defence Force (SADF) launched a surprise air and ground assault on Cassinga, codenamed Operation Reindeer. The SADF claimed that Cassinga was a major SWAPO military base, but SWAPO and other sources maintained that it was primarily a refugee camp with civilians, including women and children.

The attack began with a heavy aerial bombing by the South African Air Force, followed by a paratrooper assault. The result was a significant loss of life. Estimates of the number of people killed vary, with some sources suggesting around 600 deaths, most of whom were reportedly civilians.

The Cassinga Massacre is controversial, with differing narratives. The SADF argued that the operation was a legitimate military strike against a SWAPO stronghold, while SWAPO and its supporters labeled the attack as a massacre, emphasizing the civilian casualties.

The massacre had significant political and diplomatic repercussions, drawing international condemnation, particularly from African nations and the United Nations, and it intensified global opposition to South Africa's apartheid regime and its military actions in the region.
